I’ve been exploring the notion of vibrancy in matter — the idea that there is some ‘force’ which makes matter living, and the fact that as it fades away, matter slowly becomes inert. I find this a very poetic notion, especially in our project since we are forcing matter into all possible stages of a gradient of animation. For this reason, I wanted to experiment with a visual essay of this decay by looking at the way that a banana peel slowly decays into ashes — which is then complemented by creating lye, and then a protocell from it. The video you see in the feature is one of such studies, following the process for several days, compilling around 700 pictures which are then merged into a stop motion. The other two below are the initial attempts at this, with dramatically less frames.
